Games:

Sunday Game Days are typically scheduled three times (six games) during the season as part of the Shawnee Soccer League (SSL).  The SSL is a competitive and academy level program that plays games at the Shawnee Soccer Complex, Bridgeport, Morgantown, and Parkersburg.  Opponents are typically a mix of recreational, academy, and beginning competitive teams.  The SSL is designed to create a positive, developmental environment for players, coaches, and referees.  Yelling or verbal disagreement with anyone is not tolerated and parents will be excused from the facility by the SSL leadership  or complex staff if warranted.  There are typically 75-100 teams playing at each event, so this is a high-energy environment with lots of great soccer to watch!

Tournaments:

The SSRA selects two or three tournaments to attend based on cost, geographic proximity, and competitive level.  Past tournaments have included the West Virginia Soccer Association (WVSA) United and Open Cups; the Kick or Treat and Lorenzen Cup tournaments in Summersville, West Virginia; and, the Mountain State Cup and East Coast College Showcase at the Shawnee Sports Complex.

All players are eligible to apply for these tournaments and rosters will be formed based on availability, demonstrated skill, and experience.  Parents will be notified to express their interest in a specific tournament and the associated cost (typically $10-$40).

Tournaments are an important way for us to gauge the progress of each player and to provide opportunities for more competitive matches.  We encourage everyone to consider at least one tournament if not all of them during the season.

2023 Tournament Schedule

WVSA United Cup – September 2023

Kick or Treat Tournament – October 2023

Mountain State Cup – November 2023

Commitment:

The Academy program is only successful if you and your child commit to the training and development program.  Missing training sessions and games will hurt their performance and has an impact on their teammates.  If you register for our program, we generally expect that your child will attend at least ONE training session per week and will be able to attend  Sunday game days.  We understand that illness and scheduling conflicts can happen.  So keeping us informed when there is a conflict will be very important!

What do I need?

Players will need to wear cleats, long socks, and shin guards to each practice.  You may wear your uniform to training and games.  If you have not purchased a uniform, you may wear a WHITE t-shirt.  In colder weather, dress appropriately with long pants and sleeves.  Players may bring a water bottle.

Ball Size:

  • U5-U7 (Size 4)
  • U8-U12 (Size 4)
  • U13-U15 (Size 5)

Uniform Kits:

Capelli is the official uniform kit supplier for the Academy.  If you select that you need a uniform, you will receive an email with the order link for your player.  A jersey number will have been assigned so that there is no conflict with other players in their age group.

Cost is approximately $37.99 which includes shipping directly to your address.  Order processing is typically 4-6 weeks, so we encourage parents to order quickly once they have registered.

Where do we practice?

All training sessions and games are held at the Shawnee Sports Complex in Dunbar, West Virginia.  Players should arrive 10 minutes before their designated training time to make sure they are at the field, properly equipped, and ready to go!

Safety!

In the event that the lightning alarms are triggered at the Shawnee Sports Complex, a warning announcement will be made telling everyone to vacate fields.  This announcement MUST be followed and all spectators and players must leave the fenced area.  We would ask that players and parents go to their vehicles and wait for the all-clear signal.

Absolutely no one should be hanging, climbing, or standing on goals.  All goals MUST be anchored with weight bags.  Failure to follow directions from the coaching or complex staff regarding goal safety will not be tolerated.

Are there other activities during the season?

We are planning to schedule a goalkeeper training session for Fall 2023.  The Spring training consisted of 5 sessions for $50.  If you were able to see any of our goalkeepers in action this Spring, you will know that this training was well worth the time and money!  More information will be provided once training is scheduled.
